Discomforting comfort to dance to:
Tense to the breaking point and perceptibly seething under the surface: The art/experimental pop duo We Will Kaleid releases their new sharp-edged EP "Tongue".
The band, currently based in Berlin and Bielefeld, creates dense and oppressive arrangements with minimalist sound material. Upon rough textures of analog synthesizers, a dark and intoxicating atmosphere is forged with few but multi-faceted beat and voice fragments. We Will Kaleid are looking for a strong contrast. In dense electronic songs they prefer direct confrontation to comfortable harmony.
Just like in their music, We Will Kaleid seek breakage rather than semblance in their lyrics, challenging and creating their attraction from confrontation. The pieces on "Tongue" illuminate different aspects of communication and language. It is about exercising power with what is said and not said. Of internalized messages and supposed truths, what they tell about us and our fellow human beings. The band sheds light on struggling to break out of the downward spiral, showing structural violence as well as tangible and immediate violence. And how to free oneself from it. And leaving a mess behind, if necessary.
The tracks deal with the inability to express one's opinion. Of the strain to be filled with intense but unexpressed anger. And of the need to express it anyway to avoid implosion. Of being enclosed with oneself, of stumbling, of liberating explosions.
"Tongue" takes up dysfunctional aspects of communication and offers both spaces for self-confrontation as well as an escape from reality. It is a confusing, unpleasant trip into one's own aggressive, ugly self. We Will Kaleid are a haunting and captivating appearance, with a clear stance: they do not offer an easy cure, the band remains consistently unforgiving.
